The Most Common Dog Training Mistakes

June 1, 2025

Has your dog been completely trained? If not, we strongly suggest you resolve this as soon as possible. Training Fido properly entails more than just teaching him good manners. It is critical to his safety, as well as the safety of any other humans or creatures whom he interacts with. You don’t have to be an expert to teach your pet simple commands like Sit and Stay, but it is critical to take training seriously and utilize suitable approaches. Continue reading as a local Mapleton, UT veterinarian highlights some of the most typical dog training mistakes.

Being inconsistent

Fido’s training does not only include teaching him commands. You’ll also need to educate him on some basic manners. This might include everything from staying off the couch to not jumping on your brother when he visits. Be consistent with whatever you select. Don’t let your dog sleep on your bed one night and then punish him the following day. That will simply teach your dog that it makes no difference whether or not he obeys you. That is not the desired mindset!

Neglecting positive reinforcement

We usually advise folks to avoid those methods that employ negative reinforcement. That includes things like shock collars, as well as using a tone that may inspire dread. Using fear or pain as motivation will backfire in the long term.  In fact, your canine companion may even become afraid of you. While these devices may have some use in specific professional training circumstances, it is best to keep things positive. rather than focusing on your cute pet’s blunders, reward him for getting things right.

This is also relevant to your canine companion’s impression of training. You want Fido to like going to ‘school’!

Boring your dog.

Dogs often have short attention spans, except when they are watching their masters prepare delicious food. Fido is likely to lose interest in training after around ten or fifteen minutes. Some puppies may not live that long! Okay, it is alright. You can divide your pet’s training regimen into many short sessions.

Attending a class will most likely take longer. However, Fido is unlikely to be in the spotlight the entire time. He will also have a lot of breaks.

Inappropriate Course Curriculum

Man’s Best Friend can learn a wide range of tricks and commands, including some that are extremely precise and complex. not all dogs are required to know how to retrieve mail or turn lights on and off.

However, there are a few basic commands that your canine companion must be familiar with. Sit, Stay Down, Heel, and Lay Down are the most essential dog obedience commands. Drop It and Leave It are also really beneficial. Start with these before going on to more sophisticated instructions or cute tricks.

Confusing Commands

Did you realize that dogs can understand more than 165 words? That’s a significant amount. But that doesn’t mean they understand our language. Fido does not understand the difference between ‘Sit’ and ‘Fido, go sit down right now!’ since he is incapable of contextualizing it with other words.

When speaking with your pet, use the same words or phrases every time.

Not testing Fido

It is critical that you ensure that your dog is genuinely obeying directions and not simply doing whatever he thinks would earn him a treat. Put your pet through his paces in a variety of circumstances. For example, invite a dog-owning friend over to test if Fido will still obey with his pal present.

Overfeeding

We discussed the importance of positive reinforcement earlier. Of course, praise and pets have a significant role. However, treats might be the deciding factor. You want your pet to develop a positive link between the work or command you give him and the reward.

You must, however, use caution in this situation. You don’t want to use large treats because you might overfeed your lovely student. Snacks are ideal while training. They were created for this purpose, after all. Thin hot dog slices or shredded deli meat can also be used. Just stick to the safest options. For more information, speak with your veterinarian.

Not having any fun.

Our canine companions are incredibly observant and can detect changes in our moods. Only work with your furry friend while you’re upbeat. Otherwise, your dog will pick up on your tension, sadness, or anger.

Of course, spending time with your dog might improve your mood if you’re having a poor day. It’s common for dogs to try to make their owners feel better when they sense something is wrong. That’s okay! Fido’s unconditional love is one of the many reasons he is such a valuable gift.

Appropriate timing

You should work with your pet around the same time every day, even if it is only for a few minutes. Ideally, choose a moment when your furry friend is still active but not overly excited. If Fido is eager to go for a stroll, he will probably pay little attention. You will also have a difficult time teaching your adorable student if he falls asleep halfway through class.

Distractions

Choose a location where your pet will not be distracted by anything other than you. It could be challenging to keep your puppy focused on his homework if there are distractions like cheeseburgers, squirrels, or cats around.

Give Up

Our canine buddies are all unique, and some learn faster than others. Don’t give up if you feel stuck. That is not going to benefit you or your dog. In fact, in the long term, you may wind up with a canine with behavioral disorders. If you believe you have reached a brick wall, consult a professional behaviorist.

It is not refreshing.

Even after your canine companion has completed his basic obedience orders,  have him practice his repertoire on occasion. This is excellent for building your dog’s self-esteem. It’s also a fantastic approach to ensure that the training is retained.

Lack of enjoyment when training Fido is essential for his own protection as well as the safety of all those around him. That suggests it is a severe matter. The classic adage “all work and no play” also applies to our canine pals! It’s critical that you and your pet both enjoy Fido’s training sessions. Be upbeat and incorporate plenty of compliments and cuddles.

Discontinuing Training

Who says you have to quit when your dog has learned the fundamentals? Show Fido some charming tricks or test out new instructions.
