Dog Care Mistakes: Top Things To Avoid

February 15, 2025

We’ve been friends with our canine companions for thousands of years. In fact, some studies indicate that we domesticated dogs as much as 30,000 years ago. That’s 10,000 years before we domesticated horses and livestock! While we’ve gotten to know Fido pretty well in all that time, not everything we’ve learned is common knowledge. In fact, there are some pretty widespread misconceptions about how to care for Man’s Best Friend. A Mapleton, UT veterinarian lists some common dog care mistakes below.

What Are The Biggest Dog Care Mistakes?

While there is almost no end to the specific things one can do wrong when it comes to caring for Fido, there are definitely some general ones to be aware of.

Overfeeding Fido

More than half of our canine pals are obese or overweight. Fido’s begging expression may be cute, but that extra weight is very bad for his health!

Not Controlling Your Pet

You should always be able to control your canine buddy. Training is absolutely crucial here. You don’t necessarily have to teach your pooch to fetch your slippers or play dead, but he should follow basic obedience commands. We also recommend keeping Fido leashed whenever you take him off your property.

Negative Reinforcement

Fido is a wonderful pet, but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect. Sooner or later, your furry pal is going to do something wrong, whether it’s chewing your shoes or getting into the trash. Don’t punish your pup for his mishaps. Dogs don’t understand punishment, especially after the fact. This may just confuse and/or scare your four-legged friend. Focus on rewarding good behavior.

ID

Microchips and ID tags are small devices that can have a huge impact. Proper ID is a must!

Not Enough Stimulation/Exercise

Your furry buddy’s mental health is just as important as his physical health. Everyone needs some sort of entertainment. Toys, walks, training, playtime, and exploring all help keep Fido amused and happy. That in turn can go a long way towards curbing bad behavior.

Overlooking Grooming Needs

Your pooch may never love baths, but he will definitely be more comfortable with clean fur. Two aspects of doggy beauty care that are often overlooked are dental care and nail trims. Both are extremely important. Dental problems are just as painful and just as prevalent in dogs as they are in people. Overgrown nails are another big concern, as they interfere with Fido’s gait and stance, and put additional strain on his joints.

Lack Of Veterinary Care

We recommend that all dogs be fixed, microchipped, and kept current on exams, wellness care, and preventative products. Healthy dogs are happy dogs! Fido should see his Mapleton, UT veterinarians regularly.
